These are mostly editorial, with a few book illustrations. (For more book illustration, check out my Spot Illustration Portfolio.)
For some time, I have been grappling with the lovely challenge of visual storytelling and the possibilities a really great image can unlock within the viewer. I remember reading The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg when I was younger, and the amazing effects that those storyless yet intensely narrative images wrought in my mind. The best conjunction with that experience I can think of was when I was in college and read Italo Calvino's incomparable Invisible Cities, verbal paintings that could set your head to spinning.
My own work tends to be more humorous than mysterious, but I am, nonetheless, telling you a story. Or sometimes a joke. Yes, and sometimes a one-liner. I love playing with expectations (and sometimes channeling my own pet peeves in a productive fashion).
